I start the first day of class by having my students fill out a Google Form about their hobbies, favorite music, and hopes for the semester in English Language Arts. This helps me get to know them personally and shows that I value their individual interests. At the high school level, I have used their responses to curate classroom playlists for quiet moments like reading or writing, creating a more comfortable and familiar environment. In middle school, I still gather music suggestions from students, though I have not yet implemented full playlists at this level. Even so, this practice is a simple yet meaningful way I begin building community and bringing student voices into our shared classroom space.
